What is ARFID?
ARFID stands for Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder. It was formally recognized in the DSM-5 in 2013, which means it’s a relatively new diagnosis compared to other eating disorders.
People with ARFID may avoid or restrict certain foods because of:
Sensory issues (textures, smells, colors, or appearance of foods).
Fear of negative outcomes (choking, vomiting, stomach pain, food poisoning).
A general lack of interest in eating or food.
Unlike other eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia, ARFID is not driven by body image concerns. Instead, the restriction is rooted in fear, discomfort, or disinterest in food.
Signs and Symptoms of ARFID
Eating a very limited range of foods, often avoiding entire food groups.
Extreme distress when asked to try new foods.
Significant weight loss or growth concerns.
Nutritional deficiencies (low iron, calcium, or protein intake).
Fear-driven avoidance of food due to choking, vomiting, or strong texture/smell aversions.
ARFID vs Picky Eating
Picky eating is temporary, common in children, and usually doesn’t harm growth or health. ARFID is more persistent and serious — it can cause nutritional deficiencies, slow growth and development, or negatively affect social life (like avoiding eating with friends).
